Breaking Down a Commercial Tire

A good set of commercial tires will help you improve fuel efficiency and get you where you need to go safely. Understanding the parts of a tire will help you maintain your investment.

The Layers of a Commerical Tire

Inner lining: The innermost layer of rubber keeps an airtight seal on your tire’s air pressure. It’s usually made of synthetic rubber.

Carcass: This layer is a framework of cords that creates a semi-rigid structure to support the inner lining. The carcass determines a tire’s optimal pressure and load capacity.

Bead: This layer is the edge of the tire that sits on the wheel. It’s made of thin wire, steel and rubber and bonds the tire to the rim. It also creates more structure to help the tire retain its shape.

Sidewall: This is the flexible rubber between the bead and the outer tread. The sidewall is one of the most important parts of a tire because it protects the inner layers from damage, prevents air from escaping and keeps the tire’s body plies intact.

Belts: These are the steel cords embedded in rubber that connect the tread to the carcass. Belts bind the tire layers together and protect them from punctures.

Undertread: This layer is made of synthetic or natural rubber and keeps the tire cool during operation.

Tread: This is the outermost layer of rubber that touches the road. It’s the thickest layer and is usually made from a synthetic and natural rubber blend.

Tire Sidewall Information

The sidewall contains important information about the tire’s specifications.

You’ll find the Tire Identification Number (TIN) and Tire Performance Criteria Specification (TPCS) on the sidewall, which includes information on:

  • Section width: The tire’s width in millimeters.
  • Aspect ratio: The sidewall’s height from rim to tread as a percentage.
  • Type of construction: Radial or bias tread.
  • Rim diameter: The size of the wheel, in inches, that fits the tire.
  • Service description: The load index and speed rating. The load index indicates the tire’s maximum carrying capacity. The speed rating is the top speech the tire can reach.
