Michelin Retread Process
Initial inspection: Bauer Built utilizes grazing light processes and electronic liner inspections to detect minute holes or perforations.
X-Ray inspection: This inspection is required in every Michelin retread facility in its service network. We examine suspected sidewall and bead damage and verify the integrity of existing repairs.
Buffing: Michelin’s computer-controlled buffing technology has a database of over 1,000 customized programs, so buffing matches the specifications of your tire’s brand, model, and size.
Casing integrity analysis: We monitor for crown and belt separation and use laser analysis to identify anomalies or air trapped in the casing.
Repairs: Michelin retreads use uncured rubber backing for optimal bonding. Thermal curing and mechanical pressure ensure strong adhesion.
Tread building: Michelin’s Tread Builder uses cushion gum and pre-mold tread rubber over a buffed crown to create a uniform bond surface. Bauer Built technicians apply new patented Michelin tread patterns.
Double enveloping: An inner and outer envelope is applied to the tired and placed under a vacuum to create even mechanical pressure.
Curing: Retread tires are cured in a chamber heated by steam or hot water to create a consistent curing temperature. Curing lasts 90-120 minutes.
Final inspection: The crown, sidewall, bead, and interior casing are inspected hot to detect further anomalies.
